Installed Aluminum glove box handle
Compliments of 71sbeetle @ www.vwvortex.com
Today I installed the newest mod on our 2010 Golf TDI: an aluminum glovebox handle. It's very easy .... as long as you have the right tool
Here is the handle we are installing:
First, go to your car and look at the stock handle, then look at the new handle and notice there is a screw hole on the left side of the handle (looking at it the direction it is installed):
Now open the glove box door, and on the left side, you will see a hole there, that is where you reach the screw from:
Now comes the tricky part .... you need a short/stubby Torx 20 screwdriver with a MAGNETIC end .... mine wasn't magnetic and that's where the sh.. hit the fan lol. Unscrew the Torx 20 screw and pull it out thru the hole, then remove the stock handle, push the right side in while lifting the left side out towards you, look at the back of the aluminum handle you'll understand why, there is a little "hook" that holds the right side in
Stock handle out:
I wasn't so lucky and my screw fell into the glovebox door, so I ended up having to take the whole glovebox out in order to wiggle the screw back out .... and let's just say teh glovebox on the MK6 is much MUCH harder to remove than on my B6 Passat, you basically have to take half the dash and center console out .... so MAKE SURE YOUR TORX DRIVE IS MAGNETIC, that will save you a lot of headaches (turned a 5 minute job into an hour job).
Anyway, once the stock handle is out, you have to switch the lock cylinder over to the aluminum handle, to do so, first un-clip the back cover of the stock handle, once that is done you will see the back side of the lock cylinder and 4 little tabs holding it in. Put the key in the lock cylinder (helps to get it out) and pull back all 4 tabs while wiggling the lock cylinder out (a little push from the backside of the lock cylinder helps it out) and now just pop the lock cylinder (in the correct orientation) into the aluminum handle:
Now put the handle back in using reverse steps. Right side hook first, the push left side in, put the screw on the MAGNETIC Torx driver and put it thru the hole and into the handle (it's at an angle remember) and tighten the screw. Once that's done, close the glove box door and enjoy !
Two extra pics, sorry the car is dirty ...
I am not responsible for any damages or anything that happens while you work on your own vehicle, this is just intended as a guide to give you an idea of the install of this handle.
Enjoy !
