Go ahead and remove the shift knob now, which just unscrews from the shaft. Next remove the carpeted side panels on either side of the shifter. There is a small carpeted tab towards the front of the panel that you lift up to expose the Phillips screw underneath:

Once removed, slide the panel forward to remove it completely.
This provides access to the shift boot bracket screws which then get removed from each side:

Now you can pull the shift boot and bracket up and towards yourself to clear the rubber bumpers on the front of the assembly. Don't force anything, 25 year old plastic can be fragile!

Flip the assembly over to reveal the four small screws in each corner.

Once removed, the two lower sections come apart as well as the threaded shift knob collar and the inner rubber boot.

Installation is opposite of removal. Then top it off with your favorite shift knob to complete the update:
