I got the "C" clips out of the 1980 Camaro rear-end. I ended up taking the springs out of the locker assembly. I had to fight it a bit, but the clips finally fell out. So, I am going to look into getting the axles turned down tomorrow.
I pulled the gas tank, rear-end and leaf springs out of Cindy.
Gas Tank Removal:
First, cut all the fuel lines. You will have to do this on both sides if you have a 1970 Camaro. I believe its the only year that you have to do this.
Its kinda tough to see, but there are two nuts that need to be removed next. I squirted them with a penetrant real well.
Make sure you support the gas tank, especially if it has any gasoline in it. I used my jack.
Now, slowly lower the jack, until you can see the wires that are connected to the sending unit. There are two, one is connected right beside the passenger side bolt(ground), and the other is connected to the fuel gauge. Disconnect these.
If you're lucky like me, you might find a build sheet.
Woot!
Now proceed to drop the tank by lowering the jack, and pull it out.
Now onto the rearend. Support the rear with the jack.
Next, I removed the two upper shackle bolts. The are tight in there, so I couldn't use and air tools. I ended up using a end wrench, and penetrant. Make sure the threads are fairly clean. I put the end wrench on the nut, and gave it a few whacks with a hammer. It broke the nut loose. After that, I just wrenched them off, like any other nut.
Then, I moved to the front. There are three bolts that need to come out, not including the bolt through the front of the leaf spring mount. I just used an air gun to zip them off.
After that, disconnect the shocks from the rear, and the drop brake line. Using the jack, slowly pull the rear towards the back of the car.
All done!
So, since I finally got the axles out of my other rear-end, I will see about getting them turned down. I met with Tobin from Kore3 today. He's a great guy. He really knows his stuff. I bought most of what I will need for my rear brake swap. I dropped off my hydroboost unit with him, and we talked about moving the proportioning valve underneath the master cylinder. He's going to give me a call, when he gets it done.
If you are in the market for brake stuff, I would highly recommend Tobin and his staff at Kore3.
Love the old camaros
