After getting a symptoms of a misfire, followed quickly by a check engine light, I scanned the car to be sure that's what it was. Being the car has just shy of 100k and I didn't know the age of the coils or plugs, I decided to replace them all at the same time. In addition to age, the plugs were NGKs, and not Bosch like recommended. Any Euro car owners know how much these cars can be finicky with ignition components, and it's best to go with OEM plugs and coils or you end up chasing problems. If you'd rather read than watch the video, check out below!
1) With the engine cover off, remove the charge pipe, it's in the way to getting at the coils and plugs. Undoing the clamps and mounting bracket is a bit of a runaround because everything is a different size, but it's best to just get it out of your way.
2) Unplug the harness from the coils, and remember to be careful because you don't want to break the clips!
3) Using a 10mm socket, unbolt the coils and remove them.
4) Using the spark plug socket, remove the plugs
5) Make sure the plugs and coils you bought match the ones you take out! Also, double check your spark plug gap. Most come pre-gapped, but you want to be sure!
6) If your plugs didn't come with never-seize, put some on there now. Then hand tighten the plugs, you want to make sure they don't cross thread!
7) Once the plugs are hand tight, go back and torque them to 22 ft/lbs or 30nm
8) Re-install the coil packs, and don't forget to put a dab of dielectric grease in the end that touches the top of the plug
9) Bolt the plugs back down, plug the wires back in, and you're good to go!
