Relocating Cruise Control

Compliments of Cyberbug @ www.miata.net

So after replacing the steering wheel the only thing I missed and really needed was Cruise Control. Long drives can be a pain with out it literally.

I have been thinking about doing this for a while. Problem was figuring out the wiring and location.

I finally decided there is no good place to relocate it without major fabrication and taking the circuit board out. So I decided to keep the steering module as is and just put it in the center console, like one of those Bond cars. All I need to do is engage it, don't have to play with it. It will be easily reachable there.

Figuring out the wiring was the trick. There are four wires, two for illumination and two for cruise controls. All the function (4 of them) work off of one circuit. The PCM recognizes the current from each and there are different resistors on each.

I could not just plug it on the clock spring any more I had to tap on the other side.

Any way, with the help of the wiring diagram and PCM I was able to figure it out, at least on paper.

So far I have been able to test that the illumination works as it should and the cruise like comes on indicating its on. Actual cruise is to be tested.

here is the wiring

Function = control side = PCM side behind clock spring (see picture)

cruise +ve = green = Pink/Blue

cruise -ve = blue = Yellow/Blue

illu +ve = red= Red/Blue

illu -ve = black= Grey/Red

Happy it report everything works flawlessly

The CF portion/skin just pops out and is pretty thin, but the circuit board and buttons are held in one big mold. No way to separate the two and have functioning buttons, the buttons are help in the mold and it is pretty think.

The center piece which is not covered in CF is part of the entire housing. I did take it all apart and quickly found out there is no way to separate the two.

Only other option would be to find a convenient place with enough depth to house the whole thing and cut a slto to expose the buttons. but I could not find such a place. So this will be fine as is.

I do have to reach back actually to open the cubby and turn it on due to the racing seat position and harness. But its doable and it works. It stays on and the thing with it is that once you turn it on it stays one after you restart the car. So all you have to do is set it everytime.

I dont' plan on using accelerate and deccelerate feature or cancel button, brake pedal does that. All I needed was the on/off and set button.

Again people who haven't changed their wheels and don't have race seats not an issue for them

Very few who will need to relocate it. I also had to do some custom adjustments on the seat cushions to get every comfy with some special foam etc.

Long drives were getting to be a pain but now all is good.
