NC manual transmission fill drain bolt plug size fluid steps tricks tips
Compliments of jodaboda @ www.miata.net
Did I get enough keywords in there? Some/most/all of this has been covered in various threads, so I'm just compiling for reference (though I hadn't seen anyone mention the socket tip, which I stumbled across today).
Just a quick tip for those changing their tranny oil (just did mine today, with Motorcraft synthetic):
+ You can use a 15/16" socket for both drain and fill plugs! It does not slip/strip.
Other tips (mostly for me to see next time I have to do this ;-) ):
+ Car should be very well warmed up first (1/2 hour+ drive).
+ Jack up the car to level, or with the driver's side slightly lower.
+ takes 2.5 quarts exactly. Buy three quarts, then fill the pump gallon bottle (bought pump adapter from Autozone and put it on a cleaned-out coolant bottle) with 2.5 Quarts (or you can do the snaked-hose-with-funnel method).
+ Get MOTORCRAFT full synthetic manual transmission fluid XT-M5-QS

+ Open FILL plug FIRST! This is to make sure it will come off, and to allow air in so the drain goes faster.
