Okay gentleman...............

here it is...........

After starting to smell coolant, smoke out the exhaust and the crazy oil consumption joined with the loud ticking from the drivers side head we gave in and pulled the motor.

The findings are well, interesting.

Passenger side headgasket has failed, brand new and its done already (Cometic btw). There is obvious oil on the top of the block and residue. So thats fair to say replacement with OEM gasket tomorrow. I truly hope this is the source of my woes and its uphill from here.

There is something else though that is very concerning, I appear to have surface rust on my cams??!!!!

It is more apparent towards the cam gear end appears to be from a lack of oil?? Could my AVCS not be working? If so I would think I would have a check engine light. Is the headgasket leak causing the cams to be washed of their oil or not get enough oil?

It is on both sides, pass and drivers but more so on the pass side where the HG leak seems to be.

Thoughts? Oh and I havent been able to check the pistons etc yet as I need the cam gear tools from Subaru to remove them and I cannot get those until tomorrow...

Pics.....

Any ideas???????

Oh and the rust seems to rub off with a little effort.

The surfaces were decked, cant remember the RA but whatever Junior reccomended, yes manual torque order and 90ft lbs on ARP studs.

Im a little confused about the surface rust though, its just weird as anything. Im hoping the block is still in good shape and new gaskets with some tlc will get her back on the street.

I didnt use much gasket on the oil pump, im not sure why it appears to be so much on the heads. Il reduce the amount when they go back together. The only thing I can think of at this point is there was something on the heads that caused it to fail, perhapr some contaminent or debris that I totally missed. Not unfeasable with my luck!!

Once I have the heads off I can get them checked locally for trueness, if it comes out there is an issue il send them your way as I know the work quality is excellent. I have not run over 5psi of boost as you suggested, under 4k rpms with engine braking etc.

There must be more to this story, tomorrow il have more info.

Oh and yes, stock cams and heads.
