RE: white smoke in engine bay and coming out of exhaust. So, over the weekend I started up the mustang and let it run for about 8 minutes. Not long, but long enough to detect a few things. 1.) massive white smoke from engine bay and exhaust , 2.) a clanking sound which seemed to be coming from the engine bay too. Yikes. I was told smoke was normal, especially when “breaking in” the engine, and from residual oils. I agree. But the smoke and noise was troubling. So, disassembled the valve covers, rockers, and heads. Discovered that inside of the valve coils, the rubber stem seals (umbrella style) which should be soft, were hard, old and cracked. Pretty sure they were original... All of them were broken. Naturally, without these excess oil was leaking causing the white smoke, or at least that seems to be a pretty probable cause. Used a universal overhead valve compressor to remove the springs. There is a possibility the sound is coming from the lifters , as some videos online with identical sounds seem to come from that. Ordered new lifters, so I guess we will see! Made sure to label everything precisely. Am considering removing oil pan to take a peek and for peace of mind too. Heads looked good. No cracks and even. .

Nice work! Thankfully the body looked in decent shape to start with, lots of these are pretty rusty at least around here. Inspiring me to get a Mustang of my own!
