Making the factory intake manifold fit. There are castings for pollution controls on the rear (left side from the side of the car, right side from the engine) of the intake manifold. A whack with the Sawzall fixed that. We will not need the power brake vacuum tube, either. Once cut, it drops in just right, barely clearing an unmodified bodyshell. The clutch and brake lines on the bodyshell will be moved later, cleaning up the area. We will clean up the cuts later, the main exposed passage does not feed into the manifold, but the other two do. They will need to be blocked.
Mounting the carburetor, the distributor, the oil filter, and the water pump. Everything clears, but the factory air cleaner is not even close. We will need to work up an alternative. The carb without the air cleaner is an easy fit, and this is with the factory thermal spacer between the carb and the manifold (heat control). The oil filter will get the cooler, adding a couple of inches to the height, not a problem. The water pump assembly fits fine, but the lower outlet will be shortened, to accommodate the new radiator connection. The distributor is very close. The hood fits now, but raising up the engine a bit on the front engine mount may create a problem there. The black line from the carb, across the engine, is the throttle cable. It goes where we want it to already, the choke line follows the same path, so it will be curved over to the firewall. The fuel inlet and overflow come out of the carb and are high over the center of the engine, those will be brought over to the left side and under the car to the fuel tank.
Note the air pump nestled on the right side under the carb. That will go, and we might be able to mount the alternator there, instead of on top of the engine. That would be great, unless the exhaust header heat hurts it. The factory exhaust manifold heat shielding may be able to be used here, to help our heat situation.
So the air cleaner and a slightly lower distributor are our challenges.
