Bagging a B6

Compliments of bgsapc @ www.vwvortex.com

Just posting this up, which I typically never do on Vortex. Anyway, my name is Mark and I Just sold my MKV for a B6

The old car

Picked this 06 3.6 4motion last Friday.

4 hours after signing papers on it, the parts from ECS came. Boy did I ever take advantage of that sale.

Took a couple days and designed out my trunk setup.

Skinny 5 gal 4 side port aluminum tank was just too akward and wouldn't fit completly under the floor. So I started designing around the tank that was in my GTI.

Just pretty basic for the time being.

Put together, but not cleaned up

Heres my floor comming together

Simple yet effective for the time being. I'm on a deadline.

Little test fit picture.

So, yeah thats where I'm at. I should be wrapping up the install this weekend.

Nice to meet all you folks and look forward to seeing what you guys are working on.

I only test fitted my old wheels as a reference point for later use for me or other B6 owners. The specs are 17x9.5 Et 28 with a Falken 912 21/40/17. Also they are old school O.Z Mitos.

Distant shot.

The wheel specs I'm looking for would be 10mm closer to the fender. Also this is with factory camber adjustment of what I suspect to be around -1.8-2* as it was on my GTI. These cars are way too similar suspension wise. Anyway, I achieved -4.5* in the MKV. If I can achieve only around -3.5* it would put my prospective new exactly where I want to go.

Also, its cool. I know bagged cars aren't for everyone. I just love the low lifestyle.

Doin Werk!!! I'm working on finishing up the rear set up. I need help. Does anyone know how to get the rear bolt out of rear control arms? Not the one at the front that attachs to the hub, but the one with the toe adjsuter on it. I need to drop the control arm completly to finish what I'm trying to do. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and heres a quick action shot

I offically don't have any wheels for this car at the moment. The earliest one set will be here is saturday. The other set is probably a couple weeks out. Wish I could be done sooner

I have another update of pictures. These weren't really required, but they will be nice to have. I had OG Mason Techs on my MKV. It was time to upgrade. These are used but are the new Mason Tech design with sway bar brackets and custom powder coated wrinkle imola red.

I know this is looking like its just another air ride build, only on a passat. I don't know the mods for this section, but I'd kind of like to keep this thread here. There will be a lot more happening to this car than just air ride. It just happens that air and wheels happens to be priority numbero uno.

I'll give you guys the first teaser of one of the new wheels.

9/9/2010

Okay so I have a SERIOUS issue with my build right now. Finishing up the rear tonight was doing some testing with it seeing exactly where the axle would hit the subframe. (actually looks like the camber adjuster will hit before the axle). Anyway, this is what I found.

So yeah, its making contact with the rear subframe pretty much at any height. So I need something much smaller in diameter. Who makes something smaller. Will a firestone style help me out? Will the taper help me clear this bag, and also doesn't a firestone fold into itself? Any insight from anyone, greatly appreciated. I'm supposed to be leaving for h2o the 20th (was planning on making a week out of it)

9/11/2010

So another quick update.

FINALLY got my hands on the new wheels today. Got a chance to snap some pics of my own and do a little test fit.

The rear 9.5"s are just wonderful. Huge fan of these lips. Just the perfect size.

Heres the front. Not as much lip, but just enough.

Oh, and what would a wheel post be with out a test fit pic?

9/17/2010

It was a late one. A real late one. Heres the best pic I could get of it for the time being. Thanks everyone for staying tuned into this. I know it took me a little longer than expected. Anyway, heres my 2 a.m. just finished up post.

Updated shots from today. Still have some tuning to do, but for the most part shes good to go. Also, to the earlier question. They are 215/30/20 F and 235/30/20 R Toyo Proxy4's

Well whats next is to work on fitment and clean up a few leaks and a few loose ends. Then I'm leaving monday for OC MD to enjoy my week long vacation for h2o. After the 20 day grind it took to finish this car, I think I've earned it.

But yeah, like he said. I have a garage full of parts ready to go into this thing. My full votex kit will be painted over the winter. I'm waiting for my 2nd set of wheels to get here (should be wednesday or next week) and begin refinishing them. I have quite a few interior things to do. Maybe do a full interior swap with a CC over the winter. Also putting together an insane multimedia system for this car and moderate stereo upgrades. I care much more about convienece and luxury than I do about being ostentatious.

I did this in 20 days, just imagine what I can do between h2o and SoWo.

10/28/2010

Holy crap. Its been a month since I've updated this thread? Well...nothings happend in a month.

So, heres my winter set up.

And heres my next project.

Okay, so I built a CarPC for my old car. Its just sitting in a box and needs to be revived. So, I'm starting to re-do my set up and prep it for my B6. This is my very very early introduction post. I'll update much more tomorrow.

Heres my mobo and the whole set up. Basically its just a desktop mobo with a tiny footprint..

Its an Intel D510MO board integrated Intel Atom 1.66 dual core.

Using the M2-ATX power supply which converts 12v to 18v which is what the PC is nice and happy running at. It has a few trick features. It hesitate booting until it senses the car's voltage stabilize at 12v. Does the same with shutting down. When you key off, it shuts down the car. PC runs for 15-20 seconds and shuts down into hibernate.

Its just 2gb of ram, onboard wifi, Intel HD Audio integrated card.....pretty basic features.

One of the big things I'm doing is convertion from an HDD to a SSD. I'm actually only going to run the SSD as a boot drive to work my O/S and basic programs and having a 2nd internal HD (500gb) for media storage. Advantage is incredible boot times, opening programs quickly...shutting down quickly, things of that nature. Its something you don't really think about.....but you really do want your radio to work the second you key your car on. Waiting 30-45 seconds is way more annoying than you'd think.

I'm just running an Lilliput EB701 screen. I had to make my own and fit it to the dash kit MP3 car sells. Apparently they sell them pre-made. But heres a pic of my screen going together.

I'm going to be using the same screen. Its 7" LCD touchscreen VGA input with secondary for backup camera. Haven't decided if I want to utilize the backup camera or not since I didn't get park-a-tronic.

Highly recommend the Metra dash kit. Works seamlessly with this build

Installed screen in the old car.

Screen shot using CF and embedded dash command.

Also another upgrade I'm looking into is doing a true 5.1 surround sound system. I'm really having trouble figuring out how to do this given my onboard sound card and my inability to upgrade to another.....So we'll see what happens with that.

Basic goals are

Navigation,
HD radio,
Sat radio
Studio quality sound
Movies
On board diagnostics in real time
Mobile internet
Maybe gaming??
.

Changes from my old set up will include the switch from WinXP to Win7, conversion from Centrafuse for a front end to RoadRunner (possibly) Switching from Dash Command and ELM dongle to Micro Can and Vag-com. Making the screen look better, being able to individually control each stage, higher quality audio, maybe looking into multiple screens. Also would like to some how integrate a nob into my set up some how. I want to mimic the style of iDrive or Command system, I just want it to be user friendly. The nob is totally astetic and used much like a mouse would be. The only advantage is I won't have to lean ever so slightly forward to touch the screen.

Why CarPC not a normal Nav unit?
Cost. Features, and ability to upgrade. Normal aftermarket unit costs $1,200-1,500 Factory Nav units are close to $2k. I used a bum netbook I got from a friend for free and have less than 1/4 of that into the whole build. PC offers better sound processing ability. PC has the ability to upgrade and change as your needs do. Its totally custom, unique and fun. If you don't like something, just change it. This isn't possible with a factory or aftermarket nav system.

So yeah, stay tuned. Its one of my winter projects. I'm just awaiting a 6 channel amp, a "receiver" to process it into 5.1, my SSD, and a few odds and ends. I'm also renovating my air ride set up so both these builds will going on simultaneously. Be patient. It may be worth it.

So, did an inventory today, This is what it looks like out of the box. The only thing missing from here is power wire from the distribution block, ground from the distro block, remote and thats it. Just a matter of running all these wires to their respective places.

Bringing it back from the dead.

See you again soon B6 section.

Edit: Just in case you forgot about me.

5/3/2012

Updating a little more, Did this a couple months ago. Got my inspiration from a few other people doing this, so I did it too. Brushed steel.

So, I don't want to modify too much of the car itself. I like the B6 just how it came from the factory mostly. So it's all OEM+ type stuff. Unfortunately I won't e able to swap steering wheels out until after SoWo, but it will get done. That awful 4 spoke has got to go.

Got to clean up these brakes some how. I was thinking about a blue caliper since they're just unpainted .:R brakes anyway. Thoughts? I'm not sending it off or doing anything crazy. its got to be one of those off the shelf kits.

5/6/2012

Finally!

They're not wired yet though. No HID's no projectors. Just stock.

Even closer now.

5/15/2012

One last quick one.

6/29/2012

Tall stack of new (to me) wheels in my garage today. Hmmmmm wonder what could be happening.

7/5/2012

Well it occured to me last night that this thread was going the way more of a pic/teaser thread. Thats not what I wanted. So I'm adding some more pics of what I did with the car this winter. Hope you all enjoy.

Some what ashamed to admit it, but this was my trunk set up for the past year. I'd been so focused on working on everyone elses car, I never had the time/energy/motivation to fix my own. So it was just Hastely thrown in there.

But this year, I finally upgraded to E-level thanks to Andrew@ORT who is literally the best in the biz.

Most of why I wanted E-level was for key fobs.

And because I was tired of banging my leg on the cubby every time I got in the car because thats where my gauges were so it was always left open.

So I pulled everything out of the trunk and started planning.

Kind of liked where it was going so cut it out of MDF and got to work.

Didn't like the placement of everything, so the concept changed a little to fit hardlines better.

So that worked for me, Started to cut things out for flush mount.

I didn't really need gauges in the cabin anymore because of e-level. I just wanted to have them for peace of mind if something were to happen on the highway (broken sensor etc). That way at least I could limp it back home. But then presented a new problem. How the hell do I hook it all up while its in the car?

Solution? Tarp Door.

Manifold bolted down. Gauge lines run. Getting some where!

Test fitting in the car the first time.

The whole plan was to clean up the trunk and teh best way not to have all that rubber DOT airline laying every which way in my trunk was hardlines. This wasn't a choice for maximum flashiness or to gain scene points. I just wanted to clean up my trunk. I used coil copper (wrong thing to use), and started with the $15 bender from lowes (wrong)

Sloppy at first,

But then we got the hang of it.

Finally in the trunk wired up and working.

I probably should have taken pics of how I did e-level, but I didn't. It was tricky because of having 4motion. Pretty much everything you read for any other passat, or MKV, or CC is totally wrong for a 3.6 4motion. So we had to get crafty. Me and my buddy Spears did it all ourselves so if anyone out there reading this wants to know how just send me a PM.

Wanted to freshen up the interior a little, but trying to keep with the OEM+ look, I went with a brushed steel 3m wrap to do it. The OEM parts were just too $$$, compared to wrap that I got for $40. Unique texture. The material actually is grained so it feels like brushed steel. Just wish it was a more dramatic contrast.

One thing thats always bugged me about this car is how strangely optioned it is. 3.6 4mo, no fogs, no steering wheel controls, leatherette interior.

Well with the help of some B6ers one of those things finally got fixed.

Also with the help of my fellow B6ers I found a new votex lip, got it sprayed and fitted for sowo.

New year, fresh set of wheels as always.
The Works painted Pantone Honeysuckle was a love or hate kind of thing. It was fun for a while for me, but I wanted to class my car up again. The goal for this year was to make my car as 'normal' of a car as possible. So I had the centers chromed in black chrome, had the rear lips replaced with 3.5" Work lips, and everything was polished up and ready to go for this year.

Fresh set of Conti DW's for the rear. 235/35/18. Not too much stretch but juuust enough to tuck it in.

And finally, on the car.

Went to sowo, good times were had.

These pics courtesy of my buddy Benny. http://www.flickr.com/photos/advansuper/

But honestly, I wasn't too happy with the way the wheels came out. I think the fit funny, and the car looked broken. It also didn't drive well and thus defeated the car trying to be as normal as possible. So I came home, thought it through, and now the wheels are gone.

Got a set of 6 slots, 18x8 et4(x)?

And a set of Bentleys.

Both of them need refinish. The 6 slots are going to turn into my daily beater wheels with comfy tires. I'm just going to polish the faces. I know they may not appeal to a lot of people, but they're a throw back to my old car. I love the uniqueness of them, and I've been dying to put a set on this car since I got it.

The Bentley's i'm not so sure about. I'm open to suggestion though. It'll be a longer process because I want to have them PC'ed and thus can't do it myself and therefore costing more $$$ than I really want to spend anyway.

But this is how the car sleeps for now.

Hope you enjoy the update. I'm trying to get more involved. I really want to push this car over the top some how, but I just can't put my finger on what its lacking. So I'll be hunting the b6 section a lot more I think.

It may be more info than needed, but hey maybe it'll help inspire or guide some one through their build. I do everything myself to save $$$, so its not a huge over the top shop built car. Its just the best I can do given my ability, tool selection and budget.

7/7/2012

Had some time for arts and crafts this afternoon. What do you think?

7/15/2012

Cleaning wheels.

8/1/2012

Annnnd FAIL

Wasn't my fault. Cars in the body shop right now. I'm stressing out.

So some guy backed into my car. It was air'd out parked along a curb, in kind of a bad neighborhood (okay very bad) because thats where me and my buddy's work shop is. We were busy putting the transmission back in my saab when my buddy Spear's little brother came and got me. The guy actually stopped, called the police himself. It was all very cool how it was handled except the cop not wanting the insurance to get involved or to have to write a report. He said "oh that appears to be less than $1,000 in damages so I don't HAVE to write a report if you don't want me to" Lazy. At $2k in damages so far. Car has been in the body shop since Monday, and I probably won't have it back until next Friday.

Just really stressing out because I've never let it stay anywhere over night with out me. I'm pretty protective of it, and though occasionally (very rarely) I need some one else to work on it, its never been out of my possession over night.

8/16/2012

HEY ITS BACK!

body work is all done and car's totally back to normal. It needs to head back into the paint shop though because I have a chip in the paint thats been developing the past few days on the opposite side. I think it started with a crack from the Work wheels.
