DIY wheel hangers for less than $10
Compliments of crazynorweegian @ vwvortex.com
I recently saw someone selling "wheel hangers" for ease of wheel installation. The idea was genius and I really wanted to buy them, but the $110 price tag for a set of 4 was completely unacceptable. I thought about what they really were, and decided I could make my own.
Admittedly, it took me a while to find the proper size, thread, and length of bolt. I finally found the last 3 in inventory at a random hole-in-the-wall hardware store (don't even think about going to the Home Depot for these). It is important to get some that have close to the same number of threads as your wheel bolts so that your wheels do not get a grinding when you are fitting them. Unfortunately, I lost the receipt that had the exact measurements of the bolts, so you are on your own for that. Make sure you get the longest bolt you can, you will be happy you did.
I began with my cutting wheel, cutting off the hex head.
Then, I used my bench grinder to flatten the newly cut "heads" and to smooth and round the edges
Finally, I used the cutting wheel again to put in a rudimentary flat head screw driver compatible notch, just in case it ever gets stuck in the hub and my bare hands cannot get it unthreaded.
I have 4x100 hubs, so I only needed to make 3. I leave the top hole empty and slide the wheel on. Putting the wheels on now is a breeze, whereas it was a serious chore before making these. Now that I think about it, leaving the bottom hole empty would probably be even easier!
